Kalbarri - Perth

Highlights along the way:

Pink Lake, Port Gregory

Pink Lake's colour is due to a bacteria ( Dunaliella salina ) trapped in the salt granules. This provides a rich source of Beta Carotene ( found in carrots ) which is harvested in small ponds.

Albrolhos Islands

Yesterday we chartered a flight to the Albrolhos Islands. The Albrolhos islands lie about 60 km west of Geraldton, on the Coral Coast of Western Australia and consist of 122 islands clustered into 3 main groups: The Wallabi group, the Easter group and the Pelsaert group.

We landed on East Wallabi Island. On the island, we had the opportunity to swim, snorkel and venture off on a guided nature walk. On the walk we saw many Bearded Albrolhos Dragons, which are exclusive to the Albrolhos islands. On the flight back to Kalbarri Airport, we over flew the Batavia ship wreck site and the coastal cliffs of Kalbarri. What a day!

Kalbarri

Kalbarri National Park

Kalbarri National Park covers almost 192 000 hectares. Today we visited the National Park and saw the following:
  • The Murchison River gorge
  • Hawk's Head
  • Ross Graham Lookout
  • Nature's Window
  • The Loop

We packed a day pack and ventured out to hike "The Loop". On the way we visited Hawk's Head and Ross Graham Lookout.

The Loop is an 8km hike that starts and ends at Nature's window. It took 4 hours to complete the hike!
